Maria asks…

can a pacifier damage my teeth?

okay well i bought a blinky its a pacifier that has lights, is to go to raves and stuff im 13. i have all my teeth and im wondering if it will damage my teeth like make them crooked or something? thanks
hahaa its funny cuz i do have braces cuz i have a overbite. lol

sophie answers:

If you wear it frequently or for any length of time it can damage your teeth and cause an overbite.

Steven asks…

which pacifiers are least likely to harm your teeth?

i know i’m way too old, but i have been having bad panic attacks since i was young, about 5 or 6. i’m now 16, and the only thing that has ever been able to make me feel better in a panic attack is my binky. i do buy new ones, so it’s not like i’m sucking on a 16 year old worn out paci, but i’m worried about my teeth. i only use it for an hour at the most when i need it. my teeth look fine now, but i’m worried, so which ones should i avoid, and which are less likely to harm my teeth

sophie answers:

I was recently on Ebay and noticed that there are pacifiers designed for use with disabled adults. My thoughts are that these would probably be less damaging to your teeth than using the pacifiers that are traditionally made in smaller sizes for infants/toddlers. I think the pacifier is made by Nuk and called the Nuk 5. I posted a link to one of these pacifiers below…

Linda asks…

what do you think about my made up theory on pacifiers lol?

my (made up) theory is if my 12m old son uses stage 2m (since its smaller) his teeth wont get as bad. lol what do you think true or false?? hahaha!
some of you may say take awayt he pacifier and his teeth will be fine but my son just started using it bc i weened him off BF and that was the only way (bc he was usin me as a paci)! he ONLY uses it to go to sleep….

but what im afraid is i see he is getting more and more attached to it as time passes by. i mean he always had my boob so i understand why but i dont know im just worried bc he just turned one and NOW he is getting attached to a paci.

sophie answers:

My son is 2 and he sleeps with a bink. It is not going to hurt them any. We almost had him off of it and then he got sick and regressed a lil. He will throw it away in his own time. I would not let him run around with it all day though, but for bed it is fine. IMO

Paul asks…

Will my child’s teeth be permanently damaged?

My 2 year old daughter still uses a pacifier and her teeth are starting to show all of the signs of pacifier damage, misalignment, narrowing roof, ect. Should I be worried about her permanent teeth or will this problem fix by the time they start to come in? signed,Worried Mommy

sophie answers:

Sorry, but baby teeth are almost as important as adult teeth. You cannot damage baby teeth and then wait for adult teeth to make up for it. Stop the pacifier bit, and take her to a dentist who specialises in children’s teeth. Take care of it now, and you will not have serious problems later. Part of being a parent is to take care of things that children cannot.
