Paul asks…

my baby is running a fever could it be teething?

My 15 month old is running a fever of a 101 I gave him tylenol two hours ago but it’s only down to 100.5 he has a bit of a runny nose as well and his two year molars are coming in. I don’t want to take him to the hospital unless his fever gets higher, but could it be from teething?

sophie answers:

Don’t worry about a fever -it’s just an elevated temp. When the number is 102.9, you will have to treat it more aggressively. For now, increase his water intake & use the bulb syringe with saline drops often. Wash all hands well & treat any pain with tylenol or advil. There is NO need for a hospital. Call the pediatrician for medical advice.

Mark asks…

My baby is teething and had a fever for 5 days& day 6 a fever blister?

sophie answers:

Try infant motrin and a towel soaked in alcohol on the babies back. See if the fever goes down then but I would have taken my baby to the doc on the first day if it had a fever. But try those things to see if they work.

Sandy asks…

When your baby was teething did he seem to feel worse and run a fever at night?

and seem ok with no fever during the day? The doctor said he’s teething because you can see the white dot on his gum, but they aren’t even red or swollen. Was your babys gums red and swollen?

sophie answers:

Any discomfort my children have experienced is always worse at night and I think it’s compounded by being tired and crabby. Teething, colds etc. It’s always like that for me. I have dealt with fever from teething, even congestion, though the doctor will tell you the two aren’t connected… My first son had chronic congestion while he was teething and the doctor could find no reason for his congestion (he wasn’t sick) but would never acknowledge it was connected to the teething. I’m a believer that it was. I’ve never seen redness or swelling. I don’t think that’s a normal sign. Just the white bumps. You can try some pain reliever if the baby is really having a hard time at night. Infant Tylenol worked for my oldest. My youngest is teething now and getting him to swallow liquid Tylenol is a battle so with him I found that those natural teething tablets work wonders.
